Nyla Glide GR™ Properties & Applications
PETRO Nyla-Glide GR™ extruded nylon channels feature outstanding mechanical and thermal properties – the result of adding Molybdenum Disulphide (MDS) to unmodified Nylon 6l during the manufacturing process.
Nyla-Glide GR™, as detailed in the Petro Extrusion Technologies datasheet, is a high-performance nylon 6 material infused with molybdenum disulfide (MDS) during production, enhancing its mechanical and thermal properties for industrial applications. This MDS-filled nylon offers superior wear resistance, making it ideal for demanding environments where components face constant friction, such as conveyor systems or edge trim applications. The material exhibits a low coefficient of friction, which reduces drag and extends the lifespan of moving parts, while its high tensile strength (up to 12,000 psi) ensures durability under heavy loads.
Beyond its mechanical strengths, Nyla-Glide GR™ also boasts impressive chemical and environmental resistance, broadening its utility across industries. It withstands exposure to oils, fuels, and most solvents, making it suitable for harsh chemical environments like those in manufacturing or automotive settings. The material’s moisture absorption is relatively low for nylon at 1.2% (24-hour test), which helps maintain its mechanical properties in humid conditions. Available in 15 stock C- and U-shape channels, Nyla-Glide GR™ is designed for applications such as wear strips, bushings, and edge trims, offering a versatile, long-lasting solution. Petro Extrusion’s focus on this material underscores its reliability for reducing maintenance costs and improving operational efficiency in industrial systems.
APPLICATIONS
MDS modified Nyla-Glide GR profiles are best suited to protect conveyor rails, beds and products from sliding surface friction. Also excellent as striker plates and liners, these profiles require no lubrication to lessen friction.
Maximum continuous temperature is 225°F. Color is dark gray.
Material Behavior and Mechanical Advantages
The addition of MDS modifies the internal structure of nylon 6, increasing its tensile strength, reducing friction, and improving its ability to withstand continuous mechanical stress. This formulation supports long service life in applications where components experience constant movement or abrasive contact.
Nyla Glide GR™ exhibits:
- High tensile strength for load bearing applications
- Low friction surfaces that reduce drag and wear
- Improved heat resistance for elevated temperature environments
- Enhanced dimensional stability due to reduced thermal expansion
- Consistent performance under repetitive sliding contact
These characteristics make the material suitable for demanding industrial systems.
Thermal and Environmental Stability
Nyla Glide GR™ maintains its mechanical properties across a wide temperature range, with a maximum continuous operating temperature of 225°F. The MDS filled formulation also provides resistance to oils, fuels, and many industrial solvents, supporting reliable performance in manufacturing, automotive, and processing environments. Its relatively low moisture absorption helps preserve stiffness and dimensional accuracy in humid or variable temperature conditions.
Functional Design and Profile Geometry
Petro’s Nyla Glide GR™ channels are extruded with precise geometry to ensure consistent fit, alignment, and retention on conveyor rails, guides, and structural surfaces. The dark gray color provides visual uniformity across installations, while the material’s rigidity supports stable engagement with mounting surfaces.
These profiles are engineered to minimize deformation under load and maintain smooth sliding behavior without the need for external lubrication.
Application Fit Across Industrial Systems
Nyla Glide GR™ is widely used in systems that require low friction movement, impact resistance, and long term durability. Its mechanical and thermal properties make it suitable for both static and dynamic components.
Common applications include:
- Conveyor rails and wear strips
- Guide covers and edge trims
- Striker plates and liners
- Auger covers and elevator wear guides
- Sliding surfaces in automated machinery
These profiles help reduce maintenance frequency and extend equipment life.
FAQ
What Makes Nyla Glide GR™ Different from Standard Nylon 6?
